Geopolitical Europe Pulse: the Draghi report on European competitiveness
13 September 2024
Earlier this week, the European Commission published the report “The Future of European Competitiveness”, prepared by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi. This week’s edition of the Geopolitical Europe Pulse brings you a compilation of articles on the main ideas of the report, the EU’s place in the race for competitiveness, and the role of EU industrial and trade policy for the Europe’s global role.
Fancy the original document? The Draghi report consists of two parts: a Competitiveness Strategy for Europe (part A) and an In-Depth Analysis and Recommendations (part B). Readers get to choose between 66 and 327 pages, respectively.
No time for all these pages? No worries, you can find a synthesis in Draghi’s own word in The Economist.
Time for data: The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index compares the performance of almost 140 countries on different dimensions of competitiveness, including indicators related to fiscal policy, institutions, markets, and many more, which are disaggregated into different indicators. All data sets, which also include the European states, can be found here.
Long read: The EU’s policy has shifted from a neoliberal approach to a more active industrial policy in recent years, which also directly impacts the bloc’s foreign policy and its role as a global player. The article “Transforming Europe? The EU's industrial policy and geopolitical turn”, published in the European Journal of Public Policy, outlines the changes in the EU’s policy and its implications.
